Mount Fuji Sunrise Hike from 5th Station
Mount Fuji Sunrise Hike from 5th Station
Mount Fuji’s 5th Station sits at 2,300m on the Yoshida Trail — high enough to be above the clouds on clear mornings, yet accessible by road via the Subaru Line. For families and travellers who don’t plan a full summit attempt, this is the most rewarding way to experience Fuji: short walks across volcanic terrain, a visitor centre explaining the mountain’s cultural and geological significance, and views that on a clear day stretch to the Pacific Ocean.
Experience highlights
🗻 Stand on Mount Fuji at 2,300m with the summit rising 1,476m above you and the lowlands spreading below.
☁️ On clear mornings, the cloud layer often sits below the station, creating a dramatic sea-of-clouds panorama.
🥾 Walk short trails across volcanic scree and alpine scrub without the commitment of a summit climb.
🏔️ The Komitake Shrine at the 5th Station marks the spiritual boundary of the mountain’s sacred upper zone.
👨👩👧👦 Suitable for children, older travellers and anyone who wants to experience Fuji’s atmosphere at altitude.
Experience details
Getting there: Drive the Subaru Line from the Fuji Five Lakes area. The toll road climbs through forest and above the treeline to a large car park and visitor complex at the 5th Station. Arrive early in the morning for the best views and parking.
Walking options: Several short trails loop through volcanic terrain near the station. The Ochudo Trail traverses the mountainside through scrub and scree with wide views. None of the 5th Station walks are demanding, making them suitable for families.
Weather: Temperature at 2,300m is significantly cooler than at lake level. Wind can be strong. Bring a warm layer and windproof jacket even in summer. Cloud can roll in quickly in the afternoon.
Timing: The Subaru Line is open roughly April to November, with restricted access during the official climbing season (July–August). Early morning arrivals have the clearest skies and fewest visitors.

📅 Day 1 — Depart Tokyo
Collect the campervan and drive west out of Tokyo toward the Fuji Five Lakes. As the city gives way to forested hills and Mount Fuji rises ahead, arrive at Lake Kawaguchi in time for an afternoon walk along the northern shore with classic Fuji reflections. Set up at a lakeside campsite and enjoy a first evening under the mountain.
🚐 Drive time: 2 h
📅 Day 2 — Lake Kawaguchi Exploration
Spend a full day at Lake Kawaguchi. Rent bicycles and ride the flat lakeside cycling path as a family. Take the Kachi Kachi Ropeway to Tenjo-yama for a panoramic viewpoint over the lake with Fuji perfectly framed. In the afternoon, try fishing from the shore or visit the Kawaguchiko Music Forest museum with its mechanical instruments and garden.

📅 Day 3 — Lake Saiko & Bat Caves
Drive to quieter Lake Saiko for a morning of kayaking or canoeing on calm water surrounded by forest. 🚐 Drive time: 1 h 30 min (total)
📅 Day 6 — Hakone: Ropeway, Pirate Ship & Hot Springs
Drive to Hakone and ride the Hakone Ropeway over the volcanic Owakudani valley with its sulphurous steam and bubbling pools. Eat a black egg (said to add seven years to your life). 🚐 Drive time: 1 h 30 min

🚐 Drive time: 2 h
Top tips for this trip in a campervan
Top tips for this trip in a campervan
Avoid Golden Week (late April–early May) and Obon (mid-August) when roads and campsites around Fuji are extremely busy.
Book Lake Kawaguchi campsites early — lakeside spots with Fuji views are popular and fill quickly in all seasons.
Bring layers for altitude — temperatures at the Five Lakes (800m+) and Fuji 5th Station (2300m) are noticeably cooler than Tokyo.
Pack swimwear and water shoes — lake activities, onsen and Hakone's hot spring pools are part of the daily rhythm.
Download the Fujisan Wi-Fi app for free connectivity around the Five Lakes area.
