Miyajima Island Kayaking at Sunset

Miyajima Island Kayaking at Sunset

Miyajima’s floating torii gate is one of Japan’s most recognisable images, but seeing it from the water — at sunset, from a kayak — transforms it into something deeply personal. As the tide rises and the gate appears to float, you paddle through its pillars with golden light reflecting off the Inland Sea and the shrine glowing warm against the forested mountain behind. It is, quite simply, one of Japan’s most memorable experiences.

Experience highlights

⛩️ Paddle through the iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine at high tide.

🌅 Time your paddle for sunset, when the light turns the water and gate to gold.

🏔️ See Miyajima Island from the water with Mount Misen rising behind the shrine.

🦌 Deer often wander to the waterline as you paddle along the island’s shore.

🛶 No experience needed — guides provide instruction and manage the route and timing.

Experience details

The paddle: Tours launch from the island’s south side and follow the shoreline to the torii gate and shrine complex. The Inland Sea is sheltered and calm, making this suitable for beginners. Guides manage the group and provide basic instruction before launch.

Sunset timing: Tours are scheduled to reach the torii gate during golden hour. At high tide, the gate stands in water and kayakers can paddle between the pillars — an extraordinary perspective that most visitors only see from the shore.

Equipment: Sit-on-top kayaks, paddles, life jackets and dry bags are provided. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting lightly splashed and bring sun protection.

Booking: Sunset tours are popular and limited in group size. Book at least a few days ahead, especially in spring and autumn when conditions are best.

Top tips for this trip in a campervan

Book Kyoto accommodation and temple visits early — popular temples have timed entry and can be very busy, especially during cherry blossom and autumn colour seasons.
Reserve tee times well in advance — Japanese golf courses often require booking weeks or months ahead, and some have guest introduction requirements.
Carry a Suica or ICOCA card for seamless public transport when parking the campervan for city exploration days.
Try kaiseki in Kyoto — multi-course traditional cuisine is an essential cultural experience and pairs beautifully with a slower travel pace.
Respect temple etiquette — remove shoes when entering buildings, speak quietly, and follow photography rules at each site.
