Kamikochi Alpine Valley Guided Trail Run

Kamikochi Alpine Valley Guided Trail Run

Kamikochi is the jewel of the Japanese Alps — a flat-bottomed alpine valley at 1,500m surrounded by peaks exceeding 3,000m. The Azusa River runs through its centre, impossibly clear and turquoise, flanked by old-growth birch and conifer forest. For trail runners, it offers rare combination: accessible, runnable terrain in a genuinely wild alpine setting, with options from easy riverside jogs to serious mountain ascents.

Experience highlights

🏃 Run flat, well-maintained riverside trails with views of snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear water.

🏔️ The Northern Alps — including Hotakadake (3,190m) and Yarigatake (3,180m) — create a dramatic wall of rock and snow.

🌲 Old-growth Japanese birch, larch and azalea forest lines the trails, with wildlife including Japanese macaques and ptarmigan.

🌊 River crossings, wooden bridges and alpine meadows break up the running with constantly changing scenery.

♨️ Finish with a soak at Sawando Onsen, where mineral-rich hot springs are the perfect trail-day recovery.

Experience details

The run: The classic route follows the Azusa River from Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond (10 km return), on mostly flat gravel and boardwalk trails. The extended route continues to Tokusawa (20 km return) through deeper forest and wider meadows. Both are runnable at a comfortable pace with frequent stops for views and photos.

Guide option: Local trail guides know the valley intimately and can adjust pace, point out wildlife and share mountain lore. They also help navigate bus logistics and recommend the best onsen afterwards.

Access: Private vehicles park at Sawando, and a shuttle bus takes you into the valley (30 min). The bus runs frequently from mid-April through mid-November.

Conditions: Trails are well-marked but can be muddy after rain. Mornings are cool even in summer. Carry water, a light layer and basic trail supplies. The valley can see sudden weather changes.

🚐 Drive time: 2 h 30 min

Top tips for this trip in a campervan

Start trail days early — mountain weather in the Alps can shift quickly after midday, and mornings offer the clearest views and coolest conditions.
Book Kamikochi accommodation early — access is limited (no private vehicles) and the valley is popular with hikers, especially on weekends.
Pack trail-running shoes with good grip — Japanese mountain trails can be rocky, rooty and occasionally steep with chains or ladders.
Try the local sake in Takayama — the old merchant district has several historic breweries offering tastings.
Carry a towel and coins for onsen — many mountain hot springs charge a small fee and expect you to bring your own towel.
