Featured geology experience: Lava Centre (Hvolsvöllur)
The journey kicks off with an immersive visit to the Lava Centre, Iceland’s premier interactive museum dedicated to volcanic activity. Through real-time earthquake data, large-scale installations, and detailed geological exhibits, travelers gain a foundational understanding of the island’s dramatic natural forces—making every stop in the journey richer and more meaningful.
Askja Caldera & Víti Crater (Central Highlands)
Reach one of Iceland’s most dramatic landscapes by 4x4: the Askja volcanic system. Walk through Mars-like terrain, visit the warm Víti crater lake, and explore the vast caldera formed in eruptions. A rare place only accessible in summer by confident 4x4 drivers familiar with gravel roads and river crossings.
For less confident 4x4 drivers there is the option to drive most of the way and hike in from Dreki, join a guided super-jeep tour, or book a transfer from Möðrudalur or Egilsstaðir. This portion of the route can be made optional and replaced with a shorter southbound return if preferred.
Why 'With-a-Camper'?
🚙 A 4x4 camper unlocks Iceland’s untamed geology. Sleep beside volcanic wonders with no hotel in sight.
🌋Enjoy flexibility, comfort, and access to some of the island’s most remote geological sites.
Budget Level: Middle to Premium depending on season and van type. For a lower budget option consider traveling in a regular campervan (not 4x4) which can reduce trip cost.
Location: Southern Highlands and Eastern Interior Iceland
Trip length: 7 nights / 8 days
Our Key Advice for This Trip: Roads are open only from late June to early September, 4x4 campervans lack fixed showers/toilets, and driving off-road requires confidence—see below for full details to help you prepare.

Top tips for this trip in a campervan
Top tips for this trip in a campervan
This itinerary is designed for adventurous travelers and is best completed between late June and early September, when Iceland’s highland F-roads are officially open. Outside of this season, many of the roads—particularly those leading to Landmannalaugar and Askja—are closed due to snow and flooding.
Driving a 4x4 campervan in Iceland’s highlands comes with unique challenges. You’ll need to be comfortable navigating long gravel roads, crossing shallow rivers, and traveling through remote terrain without regular facilities or services. These are not standard RVs; most 4x4 campervans are converted vans with limited amenities, typically including a portable toilet and no fixed shower. Be prepared for a rugged and minimalist camping experience.
Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable—even in summer—so pack warm layers, check safetravel.is and vedur.is daily, and have backup plans in case of sudden weather shifts or road closures. This trip is incredibly rewarding but requires flexibility, preparation, and a spirit of adventure.
