Furano Lavender Farm & Melon Tasting

Furano Lavender Farm & Melon Tasting

Farm Tomita in Furano is the most famous lavender destination in Japan, and for good reason. From late June through August, row upon row of lavender — in shades of deep purple, pale lilac and white — roll across gentle slopes with distant mountain peaks as a backdrop. The farm has been growing lavender since 1958, and the scale and care of the plantings make it unlike anywhere else in the country.

Experience highlights

💜 Walk through sweeping lavender fields that stretch across the Furano hillside in bands of purple, pink and white.

🍈 Taste Furano melon at the farm — Hokkaido melons are celebrated across Japan for their sweetness, and they’re at their best here.

📸 The combination of flower fields, mountains and soft light creates some of Hokkaido’s most photogenic scenery.

🍦 Try lavender soft-serve ice cream, a local speciality, while wandering the farm.

🌸 Beyond lavender, seasonal flower beds include poppies, salvia, marigolds and baby’s breath in vivid colour blocks.

Experience details

The lavender: Farm Tomita grows four varieties of lavender across several named fields. The Irodori Field (rainbow field) layers lavender with other flowers for striking striped colour. Early morning visits are quietest and the light is best for photography.

Melon tasting: Furano’s rich volcanic soil and wide temperature swings produce exceptionally sweet, aromatic melons. The farm café serves them fresh-cut, chilled, and at peak ripeness — a simple pleasure that’s hard to improve on.

Other farm products: Lavender essential oil has been distilled here since the 1970s. The farm shop sells oils, dried flower sachets, soaps and other lavender products. Lavender soft-serve ice cream is a must-try.

Best time to visit: Peak lavender runs from early July to late July, though the fields are colourful from late June through August. Mornings are coolest and least crowded.

Top tips for this trip in a campervan

Book campsites near Furano and Shiretoko early as July and August are peak season and popular spots fill quickly.
Carry cash — many rural onsen, farm shops and roadside stalls in Hokkaido are cash-only.
Download offline maps for eastern Hokkaido where mobile signal can be patchy in mountain and coastal areas.
Pack layers and insect repellent — mornings in Daisetsuzan can be cool even in summer, and mosquitoes are active near lakes.
Try the local specialities — Furano cheese, Obihiro butadon (pork rice bowls) and fresh Hokkaido seafood are highlights.
