Suggested Itinerary
There are many ways to enjoy this trip—from a long weekend adventure starting with camper pickup near Washington, D.C., to a full two-week loop through Virginia’s vineyards and Blue Ridge mountains, as outlined below.
Day 1 – Hotel Arrival in Washington, D.C.
Check into a boutique hotel near Dupont Circle or The Wharf. Enjoy dinner, walk the National Mall, and get ready for your road trip adventure.
Day 2 – Explore D.C. & Camper Pickup
Spend the morning visiting museums or the Capitol, then pick up your camper and head south. Overnight near Charlottesville or Shenandoah.
Drive time: ~2.5 hrs
Day 3 – Shenandoah Skyline Drive & Luray Caverns
Drive Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park, with chances to hike, picnic, and enjoy endless ridgeline views. Visit Luray Caverns or local wineries in the valley.
Drive time: ~1.5–2 hrs
Day 4 – Blue Ridge Parkway to Roanoke
Continue your journey south on the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway. Stop at overlooks, Mabry Mill, and end your day in the vibrant mountain city of Roanoke.

Day 5 – Mount Airy & Serre Vineyards
Arrive in Mount Airy for your vineyard basecamp. Enjoy a wine tasting at Serre, live music, or a quiet evening with views.

Day 6 – Balloon Flight & Mayberry Charm
Wake early for your balloon flight directly from the vineyard. After landing, explore downtown Mount Airy, visit the Andy Griffith Museum, and enjoy a small-town stroll.
Day 7 – Pilot Mountain & Yadkin River
Hike Pilot Mountain’s summit trail or relax by the Yadkin River. Camp at a peaceful riverside or forested site nearby.
Drive time: ~30–60 min
Day 8 – Elkin Wine Trail
Visit multiple wineries around Elkin including Grassy Creek, Shelton, and Raffaldini. Stay overnight at a winery or Harvest Hosts partner with scenic views.
Drive time: ~1–1.5 hrs
Day 9 – Stone Mountain Hiking
Spend the day at Stone Mountain State Park hiking granite domes, visiting waterfalls, or simply enjoying nature. Return to your campsite or opt for a secluded forest stay.
Day 10 – Cross into Virginia: Floyd or Meadows of Dan
Drive north through the foothills to the artsy mountain town of Floyd or quaint Meadows of Dan. Enjoy local craft shops, bluegrass, and Appalachian charm.

Day 11 – Charlottesville & Monticello
Drive into Virginia wine country and visit Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. Enjoy dinner and an overnight in Charlottesville.

Day 12 – Shenandoah Northbound Return
Option to explore more of Shenandoah National Park or relax at a final vineyard before re-entering the D.C. area.

Day 13 – Return Camper & Hotel Night in D.C.
Drop off your camper and enjoy a final city night in Washington, D.C. Stay at the same hotel or choose a new neighbourhood to explore.
Day 14 – Departure from Washington, D.C.
Have breakfast at a local café, then head to the airport or train station for your onward journey.
