Experience Summary

Staying inside Addo Elephant Park at Main Camp gives you the freedom of the bush with all the comforts of your RV. You can cook a braai by your van, watch the stars at night, and wake up to the sounds of elephants, hyena or jackal at sunrise.

Spend your days exploring Addo’s game loops in your RV, stop at waterholes for close-ups, and return to Main Camp for meals at the restaurant overlooking a waterhole. There is also a floodlit waterhole lookout point and an underground hide — perfect for wildlife viewing after dark. This is where wildlife meets comfort.

Experience Details

Arrive at Main Camp and settle into your RV pitch. Prepare meals in your camp kitchen or braai area. During the day, take your own loops through the park — early morning and late afternoon offer the best light and animal activity. Stop at waterholes and view from the comfort of your RV or from hides where available.

The SANParks restaurant overlooking a waterhole gives you dinner with a view. After dark, use floodlit lookout spots or the underground hide for animal sightings. Nights are quiet; wake early to dawn calls and the unique rhythm of the bush.

Plan for 2–3 full days in Addo. Use the extra time to explore different subregions of the park — the dense thicket to the north, the more open plains in the east — and soak up both safari and campsite life.

A unique feature is the waterhole lookout point, floodlit at night, within the camp as well as the underground hide, allowing close encounters with wildlife at the waterhole. The evenings are punctuated with the calls of lion, spotted hyena and jackal while francolin and bokmakierie herald each dawn.

Plan your trip

Top tips for this trip
1. Enter at dawn in your RV — being inside the gate early improves chances of predator sightings and calmer elephant herds. 2. Cook & rest smart — use your RV kitchen and braai at Main Camp to avoid midday queues and heat; save energy for golden hours. 3. Book guided drives — SANParks night or morning drives offer sightings and routes not available on self-drive. 4. Use hides & keep low impact — the underground hide and floodlit lookout are excellent; keep noise and lights minimal at dusk.
Best time of year
Dry season (May–Sep) offers clear sightings at waterholes and cool mornings. Green season (Nov–Mar) is lush with plenty of elephants, though vegetation can make predators harder to spot. Shoulder months (Apr & Oct) balance fewer visitors, pleasant weather and good animal activity.
Not yet convinced to travel by RV?
We think RV is the best way because you can stay in Main Camp, cook and rest between your drives, and have direct access to waterholes, hides and loop roads. Prefer lodges? Try Gorah Elephant Camp for a luxury inside-park stay, or explore lodges across the Addo region.
