Drive a 4x4 camper into the Botswana bush after off-road training

Experience Summary

Begin your Botswana adventure with an afternoon of off-road driving lessons. Expert instructors will show you how to handle sand tracks, riverbeds, and dirt roads, so you’re ready to head off with confidence. From there, set out in a fully equipped 4x4 camper — Toyota Land Cruiser or Maui — with rooftop tents, fridge, cooking kit, and GPS provided.

Over 2–3 days you’ll drive into Botswana’s bush, camping in the wild and sleeping in rooftop tents under star-filled skies. Days are for exploring tracks where elephants, antelope, and birds roam; evenings for setting up camp, cooking a braai, and listening to the sounds of the African night. With full gear, maps, satellite phone, and park bookings arranged, you can focus on adventure while knowing support is available if needed.

Plan your trip

Top tips for this trip
1. Take the training seriously — The off-road lesson on Day 1 is essential. Learn to handle sand, mud and water crossings, and how to use recovery gear if stuck; skills that make the adventure safer and far more enjoyable. 2. Pack light but smart — Space in rooftop tents and camper fridges is limited. Bring essentials (binoculars, headlamp, layered clothes) and keep clutter down; vehicles are already fully equipped with kitchen gear and water. 3. Respect wildlife & stay safe — Camps are inside the real bush. You won’t be metres from lions, but may hear them at night or see elephants nearby. Keep food sealed, stay calm around wildlife, and follow all guidance from the training and rental team. 4. Know your limits & extend smartly — Distances on sand are slower than they look. Avoid night driving, leave buffer time, and confirm routes with your rental company. Extensions to Chobe or the Okavango add variety — plan them with local advice.
Best time of year
Dry season (May–Oct): The most popular time to visit. Days are warm, nights cool, and tracks are firm for easier driving. Wildlife gathers around shrinking waterholes, making sightings of elephants, antelope, and predators more frequent. Camps are at their most atmospheric with clear, starry skies. Green season (Nov–Mar): The bush transforms with lush vegetation, birdlife explodes, and newborn animals appear. Afternoon storms make for dramatic skies. Some tracks can be muddy or closed, but the sense of adventure is high and visitor numbers are low, meaning more solitude at campsites. Shoulder months (Apr & Nov): These months bring a balance of manageable conditions, fewer crowds, and strong wildlife activity. April often has cooler days and greening vegetation, while November combines dramatic skies with predator sightings. A great choice if you want value without compromising too much on experience.
